Abstract

Considers the managed retreat option to the problem of maintaining old sea defences. It is not suitable for all coastal areas, and compensation for land and property owners is major problem. Substantial development on the South Coast behind existing defences reduces the potential for managed retreat. This option is only realistic for low grade agricultural land. (J.M.McLaughlin)
