Abstract

Global climate change is an emerging challenge for world economies due to its multifaceted impacts. Climatic variations challenge the global food security and sustainable development in the presence of rising population and resource depletion. Climate change policy formulation is multitiered in terms of both scale and domain of area, as climate change policies must be integrated at global, regional, and national levels. Integration of mitigation and adaptation is also important but a difficult task. Intergenerational equity is a great challenge in the era of high-tech and dynamic production and marketing multisectoral economies. The sectoral diversity demands for policy formulation in the whole value chain of products, to tackle the emission in the value chain, and to provide cleaner technologies not only at the farm but also from the farm to the final consumption level. While carbon tax, tradable pollution permits, and subsidized clean technologies are important mitigation strategies, the adaptation strategies include risk insurance, crop and income diversification, organic farming, heat- and drought-tolerant genetic cultivars, climate fund, zoning, and improvement in production technology with ICTs.
