Can wildlife species be sustainablymanaged on the basis of existing legal categories? Taking literally the stated objectives of the symposium on “Sustainable Management of Wildlife Species: Biological, Legal and Sociological Approaches” organised in November 2004, which aimed to raise the question of the foundations of the legal status ofwildlife species, the authors note the undisputed character of this management imperative. On this basis and as an interpretative hypothesis they examine whether the “naturalisation” of the legal categories in which wildlife species are entered and which regulate action regarding them, is not themain obstacle to the objective sought by sustaining antagonisms stemming from a time when sustainability was not a matter for concern. © NSS Dialogues, EDP Sciences 2006.
