Four seismic reflection surveys were carried out in the area during the years 1968 to 1978. They were located in the tectonically most interesting areas and gave detailed information on the fine structure of the crust and the shape and depth range of prominent fault zones. Part of the uplift is attributed to displacements along these faults which were generated during the Hercynian orogeny and partly re-activated by a similar Tertiary stress pattern. Another, probably major part of the uplift, seems to be related to a plume-like interaction between mantle and crust, as indicated by an enhanced density of reflectors at the base of the crust and by a relatively high and possibly newly-formed Moho below the Rhenish massif.-J.M.H.
