Sapropel is an organic-rich sediment or sedimentary rock that may be finely laminated; it lacks, or has a depauperate, benthic fauna and high concentrations of redox-sensitive trace metals. Holocene and Pleistocene examples of this facies evidently formed by high organic matter supply and/or preferential preservation of deposited organic matter under anoxic/dysoxic bottom water or sediment conditions in partially restricted environments.
