Abstract

Artificial Bee Colony algorithm (ABC) invented in 2005 by Karaboga, mimics the honey bees. In this paper, we use ABC algorithm to reduce one of the deadly problems of OFDM, namely, peak to average power ratio (PAPR). Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a type of Multicarrier modulation that reduces fading due to frequency-selective fading channels. However, OFDM has few setbacks. A major demerit of OFDM system is that it has higher PAPR. The high PAPR causes inter-modulation and out-of-band radiation due to power amplifier nonlinearity. Therefore, it is important to decrease PAPR of an OFDM signal. Many methods such as Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) and Selective Level Mapping (SLM) have been proposed. A new method called artificial bee colony combined with Partial Transmit Sequence (ABC-PTS) algorithm that is suboptimal is proposed in our work to search for right mix of phase factors.
