Hosts of ESM, PPM and OPM are protozoa (including amoebae), insects and worms. For the most part, the presence of mycobacteria in these species is due to the widespread distribution of mycobacteria in habitats that are occupied by the animals. In as much as the same overlap of habitats is responsible for human and animal diseases, the protozoa and insects can serve as vectors for human and animal diseases. © 2009 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
