Abstract

All matter is comprised of atoms. An atom is the smallest unit of a chemical element possessing the properties of that element. Atoms rarely exist alone; often, they combine with other atoms to form a molecule, the smallest component of a chemical compound. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
