Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to describe advances in the measurement of student engagement. First, different methods used to assess engagement are outlined including student self-report surveys, teacher ratings, observations, administrative data, experience sampling methods, and real-time measures. Benefits, limitations, and methodological considerations of each of these methods are described. Next, 13 self-report measures that have been developed since 2009 are presented. These measures are compared on a variety of dimensions including what is measured (scale name and items), samples, and the extent of reliability and validity of information. Finally, ongoing challenges with the measurement of engagement and future directions are discussed.
