In order to show the intimate relationship between base metal microstructure and anodic oxide appearance and quality, this chapter discusses various possible design considerations in terms of the impact of different microstructures produced by different manufacturing processes on the appearance of anodic oxide. Differences in component microstructure that are governed by chemistry, composition, deformation and thermal history, are in turn, developed by anodizing. Small case studies, presented in the first section of the chapter, connect the design application to the appearance of the anodic oxide. Detailed case studies close the chapter that emphasize understanding the impact of critical microstructural factors, along with a balanced approach to alloy selection, manufacturing and surface finishing in order to show how each is key to achieving desired anodic oxide performance and appearance.
