This chapter sets out the context for Collaborative Arts Research within Higher Education Institutions, specifically within the UK, offering examples of the mechanisms for research development, assessment and funding in order to explore how collaborative artistic research functions within such a context. It is not exclusive to the UK: this chapter makes reference laterally to other countries but fundamentally offers a case study example which will be of interest to a wider readership. Four issues which are central to the volume are explored: Partnerships, Ethics, Performance and Dissemination. Then, this chapter proposes a strategy of collaboration which addresses the various stages and concerns a collaborative artistic research project would benefit from engaging with.
