The clinical recognition of melanoma in its early phases of progression is exceedingly important since the total surgical removal of such lesions is almost invariably curative. When the clinical recognition is delayed, the opportunity for distant metastases increases and the prognosis is guarded since treatment of such metastases is problematic. © 2007 Springer-Verlag.
