In this chapter we consider two problems. One has to do with how sand is formed and the other deals with the source or place where sand is produced. In the first, we are concerned with the processes involved in the production of sand, how sand grains come into being. In the second, we wish to know what the source rocks were and where the source area was. It is presumed that a sand body or formation itself contains much of the information needed to answer these questions. We might ask about each and every sand grain — how did it form and where did it come from? This in a nutshell is the theme of this chapter.
