Specific mechanics in video games utilize principles of behaviorism, such as classical conditioning and operant conditioning, to create addictive potential similar to gambling. Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and other problematic forms of digital media usage have become a highly disruptive factor in the lives of many people. Addictive gaming mechanics and personal biopsychosocial vulnerabilities combine to create the addictive potential of specific video games. The addictive potential of digital media appears to be able to be mitigated by enhancing biopsychosocial self-care in combination with an informed and mindful approach to selection of digital media. Even digital media with relatively few addictive mechanics can be problematic with sufficient person biopsychosocial vulnerability. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved)
