Abstract

The spectral properties of the mating calls of both vertebrate and insect species are matched to the most sensitive range of their hearing, a region in which many auditory fibers are tuned (Bullock 1977, Capranica 1978). However, previous single unit studies in fishes have focused on neuron response properties as they relate to auditory processing rather than as a component of an integrated communication system. Because of extensive work (anatomical, physiological, and behavioral) on communication in the oyster toadfish Opsanus tau (see Fine, Winn, and Olla 1977 for review), it is an ideal fish species in which to investigate matching of primary auditory neurons to the characteristics of communication signals.
