Abstract

With the exception of the lesser MPJs all joints in the foot can be fused. Fusions of the Chopart joint, the Lisfranc joint, the 1st MPJ and the joints of the lesser toes are discussed in this paper. Fusion of a joint has far-reaching implications for the biomechanics of the other joints in the specific functional chain concerned. Both the surgical technique and exact positioning of the fusion are critical in determining whether the outcome of the procedure will be successful. Fusion is indicated in cases with primary and secondary arthritic changes of different joints and in cases when there is no other way to achieve permanent restoration of the function of the foot. © Springer-Verlag 2004.
