Abstract

This paper presents some discussion points examining quality of life in its socio-economic context and highlights some of the enormous imbalances in choices and opportunities between different parts of the world. The discussion is divided in 3 parts: first, a demonstration that the relation between quality of life, health and socio-economic position is positive and progressive and that health inequalities are universal between countries and in countries: the relation between health and wealth; secondly, an examination of some of the directions taken by the ongoing, worldwide, social reforms and the lessons from the HIV epidemic and in the 3rd part some conclusions are brought forward.
