Cancer in children, as compared with adults, is rare. From 1993 to 2000, the incidence of cancer in children and adolescents aged 0 to 19 years was approximately 160 cases per 1 million.1 Despite the relative rarity of the disease and the progress made in therapy, cancer remains the leading cause of disease-related death in children ages 1 to 19 years2 (Figure 62.1). © 2006 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.
