Abstract

In arid and semiarid lands, desalination is one available option to meet the potable water requirements of growing populations, particularly of those countries that border the oceans and seas. Modern technology currently allows the treatment of virtually any type of water to potable standards. The critical issue is the cost, primarily the economics of the treatment processes and conveyance of the treated water, as related to the value of the use for the desalinated water.
