Abstract

The medical device industry is considered a hub of innovation withconstantly improving designs and processes, the possibilities seemendless. Over the past 20 years, dc motors have played its role in thedevelopment of medical instruments like surgical robots, plate readers, liquid and specimen handling systems, chromatography, and In Vitrodiagnostic machines. Regardless of what ever the application may be, alldevices in the medical industry should have high Reliability andflexibility. This paper presents a new controller model usingImperialist Competitive Algorithm (ICA) for efficient search andoptimization of Proportional Integral controller parameter in order toachieve a better close loop control of the dc motor in bio-medicalapplication. This control method was simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK tocontrol dc motor. From the simulation, it was found that the proposedmethod gives better performance with improved response in any userdefined function as the settling time, overshoot and speed error arereduced.
