There have been few travellers in northern Ellesmere Island, and, until the present investigations, work in this region had been mainly exploratory. The following account mentions briefly the early visits and describes the journeys made by the expeditions of 1953 and 1954. Short appendices record some of the preliminary results in the fields of glaciology, geophysics, ocean- ography, and geology.
