Abstract

In this monographic book we have tried to explain the extraordinary character of the Nile through its history of three main phases: the geological past, --- the ecological changes in its environment affecting man and life generally, --- and finally the phase of exploration, scientific enquiry and human possession. Some of the authors, including the editor, have written their contributions from a distance of time and space; this deletes details but brings out the important general features.
