Fighting poverty within the san community

Abstract

A case study is provided on the extent of poverty and deprivation of the San community in Botswana. The chapter discusses negligence of the needs of disadvantaged communities like the San, lack of entrepreneurship and traditional leadership skills that would make it possible for the poor to make a transition from poverty to non-poverty. Poverty is discussed as a structural problem. This chapter discusses the Game Farm initiative of San people in D’kar and the success they have enjoyed from that project. This project is currently running under the leadership of a businessman from the UK, who also provides skills to the elders of the community so that they can make the project sustainable. This chapter also covers the workshop that was run by a consultant on game farming and how to work with the Botswana Tourism Authority. The skills needed to run this project successfully are business and governance skills, which the elders of D’kar need if the project is to succeed.
