The HD standard has been developed by the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) and was approved in 1995. The ATSC standard encompasses an all-digital system and was developed by a Grand Alliance of several companies. Even though the ATSC standard supports eighteen different formats, we are restricting our discussion here to the ones that provide the most improvement in picture quality over NTSC.
