Abstract

The American health-care system can appear unwieldy to the uninitiated. This chapter introduces the key elements of this system, using a layered sphere metaphor with the patient at the central core. Elements discussed include health advocates, providers, payers, environments, regulators and government agencies, technology and innovation, and liability.
