Abstract

The aim of the study was to establish whether there is a relationship between HIV/AIDS and poverty in three administrative areas, EMbekweni, EBaziya and EMhlakulo, in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape. It aimed at establishing the extent of poverty of people who are HIV/AIDS infected and affected, how they are coping in their poverty-stricken environments and how the affected can be assisted to offer the necessary support to those living with HIV/AIDS. Ninety respondents, thirty from each administrative area, were identified and interviewed for the research study. The results of the study endorsed the hypothesis that there is a relationship between HIV/AIDS and poverty.
