Abstract

Steam generation for industrial applications by harnessing solar energy has picked up momentum in recent years. One of the major applications for steam in crude oil extraction industries is thermal enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In the current study, direct steam was generated by enclosed parabolic troughs for improved crude oil recovery. For such a plant, effect of direct normal irradiance (DNI) on the steam generation parameters was assessed. Further, the outlet steam temperature and pressure were also addressed in the study. Maximum DNI in a day was in the range of 1120–1185 w/m2 and the maximum steam generation was 1.1–1.3 kg/s. Finally, it is concluded that enclosed solar troughs are promising option for solar direct steam generation.
