Abstract

With his improvement of the thermometer, Réaumur1 was the first biologist to record the environmental temperatures of insect. In his experiments, he observed that some insects can withstand freezing temperatures, while others cannot. Early work on insect cold hardiness has been reviewed by Bachmetjev2 and Payne,3 and a modern approach to the field summarized by Salt.4,5
