Many early deaths are preventable, especially in developed countries. Poor diet and nutrition, tobacco use, limited physical activity, and alcohol consumption have all been linked to the development of chronic disease and early death. This chapter examines the relationship of these behavioral risk factors to disease and mortality. The mechanisms linking these behaviors to health are discussed and the relative effects on mortality evaluated.\r
