Abstract

Pituitary adenomas are common intracranial tumors. Depending upon the underlying pituitary adenoma type, medical or surgical therapy is typically the initial treatment for patients with pituitary adenomas. However, these patients typically live long enough to require multiple treatments. Stereotactic radiosurgery is an important secondary or adjuvant treatment for these lesions. It can provide a high rate of tumor control and an opportunity for biochemical remission. Radiosurgery conveys a small risk of new or worsening neurological deficit or hypopituitarism.
