Abstract

The importance of proper patient selection for APBI can not be overstated. Patient selection for APBI needs to incorporate patient and tumor characteristics to minimize the risk of tumor recurrence and complications. Technical considerations specific to the APBI technique used must be taken into account. Further, patients must be informed participants in the treatment decision process. The American Brachytherapy Society (ABS) and the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBS) have proposed patient selection recommendations which are also presented and discussed. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
