Abstract

A more detailed knowledge about diversity of fungal community dynamics in polluted environmental sites will provide substantial information about their potentials to natural attenuation of the pollution. Although many (bio)chemical measurements exist to assess microbial presence and activity, newer biochemical and molecular genetic tools need to explore new genes and catabolic pathways that might lead towards complete mineralization of recalcitrant pollutants. This chapter highlights the molecular techniques for assessing the fungal community structure in contaminated sites and increasing our insight into possible development of the novel strategies in fungi bioremediation.
