Abstract

Examines the social policy implications of health, aging, and worker training among European older workers. Individually authored papers are presented that were originally part of a European Symposium on Work and Aging held in Amsterdam in January 1993 as part of the European Year of the Elderly and Solidarity between Generations. The four central themes of the symposium and this collection were aging, work, and health; aging and mental work capacity; training and educational programs; and social policy and perspectives. The last two are considered to be of broad social and industrial interest. Contributors are from across Europe, with the majority from the Netherlands and France. A total of 27 papers are distributed across the four main themes and provide demographic and social characteristics of Europe's older workers. The articles range from broad sociodemographic studies to applied research in age-related differences in cognitive functioning and psychomotor performance. Specific approaches to training of older workers and the formation of public and social policies to advocate on behalf of older workers are explored. Chapter references are included.
