Abstract

Respiratory failure is defined as the inability of the respiratory system to maintain normal oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions (PaO2 and PaCO2, respectively), when breathing room air. Normal PaCO 2 ranges from 35 to 45 mmHg, while normal PaO2 ranges from 80 to 100 mmHg and declines with age according to the following formula 1: © 2010 Springer-Verlag US.
