Abstract

Nanotechnology is an emerging field in modern agriculture and is expected to become a major focus in the near future with promising applications. It is believed that nanotechnology is the solution to improve crop yield through effective use of fertilizers. This new tool has recently gained momentum around the world because of its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ecological nature. Although the Green Revolution has been beneficial to the global economy by increasing crop yields, the extensive use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides is disrupting the natural balance, resulting in a loss of biodiversity and the development of resistance due to pathogens, soil deterioration, and genetic erosion in overtime. However, the production of nano-bioformulations via a phyto-engineering approach provides us with an alternative solution to sustainable agriculture; the distribution of agrochemicals by nanoparticles increases the efficiency of precision farming. With this technology, conventional/unconventional fertilizers can be nano-encapsulated, resulting in their slow/accurate release to aid in smart farming. We summarize here the green synthesis of various nano-formulations and their application to revolutionize the agricultural sector.
