Broadcasting architectures in general and broadcast disks in particular outperform traditional client/server architectures when many clients read data from few servers. Yet several issues arise when the broadcasting model allows updates by the clients. These issues, most of which are related to the control of the concurrent access (isolation and consistency), are rooted in the asynchronous nature of the broadcast model and in the replication of data on the broadcast channel and in the caches of the clients. In this paper we study the design and evaluate the performance of a simple update model controlled by a basic locking mechanism for broadcast disks architecture that involves replication on the broadcast channel and client caches. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
