Abstract

Outlines the nature of available natural fuels and the significance of climate and weather conditions for the fynbos, karoo, grassland, savanna and forest biomes, and describes the nature and consequences of physically induced and lightning induced fires. Current fire regimes and their post-settlement (1652) developments are reviewed, with attention paid to the winter rainfall fynbos, summer rainfall grassland-savanna and arid karoo fire regimes.-P.J.Jarvis
