De olho no Brasil: a geografia médica e a viagem de Alphonse Rendu

Abstract

Este artigo procura chamar atenção para a importância da história natural na produção do conhecimento médico a partir de fins do século XVIII e, ao mesmo tempo, elucidar a posição estratégica que, no século XIX, o Império brasileiro veio a ocupar no programa de pesquisa orientado pelo paradigma etiológico ambientalista, sob a égide da geografia médica. A análise do relatório da viagem realizada pelo médico francês Alphonse Rendu ao Brasil, entre 1844 e 1845, permite destacar uma fase característica daquele ramo da medicina acadêmica européia. Ao mesmo tempo, o artigo permite identificar uma segunda fase da geografia médica, inaugurada a partir da criação dos Archives de Médecine Navale, na década de 1860.This article emphasizes the important role Natural History has played in the production of medical knowledge from the end of the eighteenth century on. It also tries to clarify the strategic position Brazilian empire came to have in the nineteenth century in relation with etiologically and environmentally oriented research programs under the patronage of Medical Geography. The analysis of the French physician Alphonse Rendu's travel reports, from 1844 to 1845, leads to the recognition of a very specific period of that branch of European medical schools. Besides, the article provides the recognition of a second period of Medical Geography, that starts with the creation of the Archives de Médecine Navale in the 1860's.
