Abstract

This paper describes a new dynamic gateway method which can be used to connect a MANET to the Internet. In the proposed method, every mobile node in a wireless mobile ad-hoc network can configure itself into a gateway when it receives an interconnection request from a neighborhood node while it is in the range of an access point into the Internet. The interconnection mechanism is based on a modified AODV routing protocol that can provide a route between the nodes in the MANET and to the Internet through a gateway. In order to make intra- and inter-communications in and out of the MANET, an extended IP datagram head is also introduced where a tag field is used to distinguish the traffic and also to combine the multiple gateways. The results obtained by computer simulations using the OPNET Modeler show that the proposed dynamic gateway method successfully provides a robust connection between the MANET and the Internet and enables services like e-mail, http, and voices over heterogeneous networks. © 2013 Springer.
