Abstract

In modern aspect, successful wound healing depends on maintaining a moist environment around the wound. A balanced moist environment facilitates cellular growth and collagen proliferation within acellular matrix. Therefore the modern dressings are based on the concept of creating optimum conditions to allow epithelial cells to move unimpeded for the treatment of wounds. The ideal dressing should also provide effective oxygen circulation to aid regenerating cells for rapid healing with minimal inconvenience to the patient. The variety of wound types has resulted in a wide range of wound dressings. This article offers a review of the emerging technologies for achieving improved wound healing. It also reviews many of modern wound dressings and novel polymeric systems used for the delivery of drugs to the wounds. Pharmaceutical agents and wound healing accelerators such as antibiotics, vitamins, minerals and growth factors that take active part in the healing process and also the advantages of local delivery and controlled release of these agents are discussed. Furthermore a brief section about the use of bioactive polymers as tissue engineered scaffolds and skin grafts is given a part regarding current developments and requirements of modern wound therapy.
