Abstract

In Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6), the serving network provides mobility management on behalf of the mobile node (MN). Moreover, the MN need not have a mobility support stack and it can handover faster in PMIPv6 than in MIPv6 with less packet loss. However, when several nodes in the same MAG (Mobile Access Gateway) handover to another MAG at the same time, a lot of signaling costs occur as each cost is incurred on each node. NEMO-BSP (Network Mobility-Basic Support Protocol) developed by the IETF(Internet Engineering Task force), enables the mobile network to which MNs are connected to perform only one handover signaling for all the MNs, reducing handover signaling cost, but NEMO-BSP cannot be immediately applied to PMIPv6. Therefore, several schemes have been proposed to combine PMIPv6 and NEMO. These schemes suggest the way the mobile network handovers in the PMIPv6 domain and focuses on the reduction of the signaling cost. However, they are often unconcerned about the signaling cost of mobile nodes that move between the mobile network and the PMIPv6 domain. In this paper, we propose fast handover scheme to enhance MN's handover performance, when the MN handovers between the mobile network and the PMIPv6 domain. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
