Abstract

This chapter provides an elementary introduction to the concept and characteristics of probability and the use of probability theory in hypothesis testing. Examples of the use of the binomial theorem and Fisher's exact in associating gene expression with observed outcomes (i.e., disease) are presented. A brief introduction to the concepts of hypothesis testing, power, ROC (receiver-operating curves) and sensitivity and specificity are also presented.
