Expert system (ES) problem selection has been recognized as one of the critical factors for successful ES implementation. This paper provides the background for preliminary investigation of both the criteria associated with a "good" ES problem, and the selection process. First, representative literature is summarized. Then, an overall research model from an innovation management perspective is presented. Some preliminary measures for key variables in the model and some findings from an exploratory field study will be presented at the conference.
