Abstract

This chapter sets the stage for the volume by positioning almost four decades of (post-)Yugoslav lesbian activism in the context of other instances of extra-institutional engagement in this region, and the broader sphere of European and Anglo-American lesbian mobilisation. It underscores the distinctly transnational (both regional and international) character of (post-)Yugoslav lesbian undertakings and examines the relevance of transnational lesbian solidarities for undermining patriarchal values that lie at the heart of still rather widespread militarisation, violence against women and lesbophobia/homophobia in all of the post-Yugoslav states.
