Abstract

The medical microbiologist in the UK has a very diverse and interesting job. He controls a laboratory staffed by scientists of high caliber and must take pride in the performance of the laboratory as it appears to the outside world. He must do everything possible to facilitate the best management of infected patients and support an environment in which patient safety is paramount.
