Abstract

Acute myocardial infarction (IAM) is the main cause of death in Venezuela and it tendency is to increase. To improve health care, countries have sought to be effective, increasing coverage and quality of care. Objective: To evaluate the technical quality of the Cardiology Service (SC) of Military Hospital "Dr. Carlos Arvelo" (HMDCA) related to the attention given to patients with IAM based on the cardiovascular program's criteria for the period 1998-2009. Methods: three instruments were designed and validated to assess the knowledge applied to medicine by evidence, applied technology, and hospital risk. Results: in the Cardiology Service (SC) there was a substantial deterioration in the technical quality, in 1991 was 72% and decreased to 50% in 2009. Conclusions: a) the Health Ministry (MS) should promote effective public policies, b) developing the institutional processes in the health institution, d) All the above implies a reform in the Venezuelan health system. © 2013 Springer.
