Abstract

Breast feeding, an integral part of woman reproductive life cycle, a natural physiological process, often becomes a cause of anxiety and worry for the mother. She needs proper guidance and support during this unique phase of her life. Successful breast feeding in a woman can be accomplished by collected effort from the treating obstetrician, nurse, paediatrician and the woman herself. Proper counselling in the antenatal period creates a positive environment for exclusive beast feeding. Establishing early contact in the immediate neonatal period and putting the baby to breast within the first of life is crucial. Obstetricians have a major role to play in promotion of breast feeding as they are the first contact persons in case of problems.
