Abstract

The ubiquity of the Internet provides both new opportunities and challenges in pulmonary and critical care education. The current medical climate of high-output clinical care and work compression requires innovation to provide high-quality, scalable medical education. Modern learners are consistently exposed to both formal and informal web-based learning early in medical education. Web-based content provides a wealth of information, but validation of the accuracy and relevance of content is both necessary and challenging. Web-based assessments, asynchronous learning management systems, analytics, and peer-to-peer social networks represent innovative tools that may advance medical education but require updates in pedagogy and effectiveness research. In this chapter, we discuss these important issues for pulmonary and critical care educators with practical examples and considerations of how best to implement high-quality web-based learning content in an educational program.
