Abstract

Space begins at an altitude of 100 km. Travelling beyond this frontier requires cutting-edge engineering and an enormous amount of energy - the prerequisites for any utilisation or exploration of space. The first space launch took place just over 50 years ago. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
