Abstract

We present an overview of seventeen different accounts of the application of description grammars (or description functions), characterizing them according to their role in the grammatical design generation process and according to their representational specification. The objective and intended use of this overview is twofold: firstly as a referential overview of past precedents; secondly as a foundation to develop a formal representation for descriptions and description grammars.
